"I can't let the Apocalypse Empire destroy this world like they did to my own... Skycomputer! Find me five teenagers with fighting spirit!" --Commander Oji

Crimson and Clover

Sam's mother interferes once more, setting her up on a date with Errol! Have she inadvertantly helped them discover a new threat by the Apocalypse Empire?

Summary

Yet again, it starts with Sam getting a phone call. Once she's off the phone, Errol makes fun of her for being such a chatterbug; she responds by telling him that being a smartass just lost him a free sushi lunch. He has no idea what she's talking about, assuming she's joking. Sam explains that her mother, being a busybody, just offered to pay for them to have a date at the most expensive restaurant in town. He apologizes, and after both of them making it clear to each other that they're only doing it for appearance's sake and the free food, they agree to go out.

On their way to the restaurant, however, they happen to see a monster and several extremely well dressed Fangwings entering a TV station.

Sharply dressed henchmen!
They both reluctantly agree that they should deal with whatever nefarious plan the Apocalypse Empire is up to, first. Trying to get in, they end up getting stopped at the door by security. Sam is about to just transform, but Errol points out that they don't want to draw attention yet, and manages to talk his way in.

Once inside, they lose the trail of the monster they saw. Asking around only lands them on the set of a children's TV show, featuring someone wearing an obviously fake rubber suit.

"Never speak of this again."
Sam comments dryly on how unconvincing it is. They decide to split up and search the whole building for them. Errol keeps asking people, until he eventually finds someone who saw the Fangwings head to Studio 4. He asks someone else where Studio 4 is, who asks if he's a director; thinking that he might get thrown out, he lies and says yes. The woman tells him there's no time to waste, he's supposed to be at Studio 3. Meanwhile, Sam tries to ask around, but is mistaken for an actress, and is unable to get in any sort of protest as she is dragged through make-up and wardrobe rapidly, emerging on a sound stage in a large Western-style ballgown, to discover Errol in the director's chair, confusedly ordering people about. He's about to direct her, then they suddenly look incredibly embarassed, and both head off, agreeing to never mention what just happened. Errol explains that they're at Studio 4.

When they arrive, they confront the monster-- Dynomax-- who recognizes them immediately as Skyfighters (despite Sam's dress). They fight off the Fangwings, and Dynomax curses them for managing to thwart his nefarious plan to destroy this world's morale by overrunning television with meaningless garbage. Both are stunned, and he begs them to make his defeat quick; but they just walk away and leave him alone, annoyed that they wasted time worrying about nothing.

Quotes

Errol: "You sure get an a lot of phone calls. What was that about, chatterbug?"
Sam: "It was all about the sushi lunch that you just lost your chance at having."

Errol: "Well, maybe we should do it. You know. For appearance's sake, not as a real date or anything."
Sam: "That was never a question."
Errol: "You're breaking my heart, Sam. But come on! Free sushi at the most expensive restaurant in town!"

Dynomax: "Curse you, Skyfighters! My plan was brilliant; it would have worked if not for you meddlers! If only I had been able to overrun your precious 'television' communication system with meaningless, inane garbage, it would have been a huge coup for the Apocalypse Empire!"
Sam: "Listen, I'm going to knock your-- wait, what?"
Errol: "Did you say your plan was just to make television dumber?"
Dynomax: "Of course! By filling the airwaves with stupidity such as 'Everybody Loves Apocalypse,' it would have been crippling for your Earth's morale. If only it had worked! Please, just make this quick, I'm no fighter."
Errol: "Wait, let me get this straight. You're saying that you rounded up an army of Fangwings, came down to this television studio... so you could fill the airwaves with stupidity?"
Sam: "Wow."
Errol: "Seriously?"
[ Both look at each other, and walk away. ]
Errol: "Well, uh, good luck with that."
Dynomax: "Where are you going...?"
Sam: "I can't believe we just wasted our afternoon on this instead of having delicious sushi."
Errol: "Do you think the offer stands?"
Sam: "I'm going to come back just to kick his ass if it doesn't!"
Errol: "Well, uh, his plan to ruin television was pointless, but I daresay his plan to completely and systematically ruin our lunch was the most evil plot we've ever come across."
