A P O C A L Y P S E

Series finale. Do the Skyfighters have any chance of stopping the nigh-omnipowerful Lord and Lady Apocalypse? And at what cost?

Summary

All the Skyfighters watch in horror as from the fiery vortex, the silhouette of a giant becomes increasingly more opaque: Oji identifies it as the Overlord, the personal mecha of Lord and Lady Apocalypse! Fira laughs, telling Errol and Sam that they might as well go; they're powerless against its awesome power anyway. The Overlord starts to attack, demonstrating its strength by completely destroying a nearby building just by looking at it. Quickly the Skyfighters form the Super Blitz Defender, and immediately start to get thrashed around badly by the Overlord. Inside, Oji tells them that there's little hope. Terry has a plan, though, and asks for them to distract Overlord while he takes on Apocalie. While he goes, they continue to fight, the Blitz Defender becoming more and more badly damaged, barely able to fight. Assuming Terry must have failed, Davis tells the others he know what will work, and tells them to eject. They do so, only Errol realizing why.

Davis triggers an overload in the Blitz Defender, and saying his last words, the barely functional mecha bull rushes the Overlord, grabbing it by the waist; exploding violently! When the smoke clears, the Overlord has been destroyed... but even his sacrifice wasn't enough, with Lord and Lady Apocalypse standing in the wreckage. They both state that they're impressed. More banter is exchanged, with Oji saying that they'll pay for what they did the last time; to his shock, they don't remember him. Lord Apocalypse explains that they can hardly keep track of all the superheroes they've defeated, filling the sky with images of all the worlds and heroes that have fallen before them. Suddenly, they all realize just what the stakes are, and all four attack.

Meanwhile, Terry is in a massive battle with Apocalie, but losing; eventually, he is knocked down and detransforms, barely holding on. She takes his transformer, laughing, but her laughter turns to tears when she's overwhelmed by the memories of Dr. Hope's death. Developing a conscience thanks to her memories, she realizes she's the only one capable of putting everything right. Terry grins as she flies off.

The other four Skyfighters are nearly down for the count, when suddenly, they're interrupted by the rapidly flying Skyfighter White, who manages to pummel Lord and Lady Apocalypse both, grabbing them, and flying towards the fiery vortex. They collide, and a massive explosion follows. When all the smoke clears, there's no sign of any of them, or even the vortex. They're about to lament White's sacrifice, when Terry staggers out, alive; explaining that it wasn't him. All are amazed.

A while later, Alex and Kari are dressed in white dresses, at a small ceremony held by Oji, with the others in audience. Terry says that he's not much help without his powers, and he'll go back to teaching. He wonders if Alex and Oji are okay being stuck on Earth, but they both agree there's lots of work to be done here. Sam has been working to clean up the straggling monsters, and Errol says he's been organizing a new volunteer law enforcement. But they all agree: for now, the Earth might be devastated, but they'll recover... thanks to the noble sacrifices of Davis and Apocalie.

Epilogue: In a fiery wasteland, surrounded by mechanical wreckage, Davis slowly wakes up. A figure in white offers him a hand, telling him that they defeated the Apocalypse Empire for good, and that she'll explain everything; but he should get up, because they've got a long way to go before he can get home.

Quotes

Oji: "There's no hope at all. We tried... and failed."
Terry: "There's always hope. I've got an idea... you distract him, I'll take on Apocalie. Only she's got the power to stop this."
Oji: "...it's worth trying."
Davis: "Go! We'll cover your back!"

Davis: "Well, of course it had to end this way... time to go back where you came from, Apocalypse!"

Lady Apocalypse: "I'm sorry. I don't recognize that at all."
Oji: "The last world you destroyed, twenty years ago! The Skyfighters! The first group of heroes who stood against you! How can you say you don't remember me?!"
Lord Apocalypse: "It seems there is a fundamental misunderstanding on your part. You believe yourself to be important."
Lady Apocalypse: "What my husband means is... if it was twenty years ago, it wasn't the last, and it wasn't the first. Our empire spans many worlds."
[ Lord Apocalypse waves, and suddenly, the sky is filled with the images of countless worlds, spectral superheroes filling the sky. ]
Lord Apocalypse: "Perhaps you could point out which one of these your friends are? No? A pity; they must not have been that important."

Oji: "There's more at stake then I ever could have dreamed of... surrender? Never."
Lady Apocalypse: "Your tenacity is impressive, but you really should. Make it painless for you; this is just a forgone conclusion. Your world fell into darkness the moment we were summoned here."
[ Silence. After a long pause, Kari steps forward. ]
Kari: "Maybe... but even in the darkest shadow, there will always be a light!"
Alex: [ Stepping forward, holding her hand. ] "We can overcome if we just believe in each other... you can count on this: we'll give it our all."
Sam: [ Stepping forward. ] "Be smug all you want. We will fight; and we'll kick your asses!"
[ All look at Errol expectantly. He steps forward. ]
Errol: "No, I don't have any speech to make, I don't see the point. Come on, Skyfighters: let's go!"
[ They charge Lord and Lady Apocalypse. ]

Apocalie: "Ahh, finally! At long last, I'll take what should have been mine... your transformer!"
Terry: "You..."
Apocalie: [ Grabs transformer from his hand. ] "Yes! Take it to the sky... Skyfighter White, go! Aha ha ha!"
[ Apocalie transforms into a more monstrous Skyfighter White. ]
Apocalie: "Such power! Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha-- ah... ha... ha... [ Starting to have visions of Dr. Hope's life and death. ] ah... ahh... oh god... oh my god... [ Sobbing. ] I... what is this... what... what have I done? She hurt so much... they all did... so senselessly... argh! What have you done to me?!"
Terry: "What's wrong... grew a conscience?"
Apocalie: "You knew this would happen, you planned this... but... I killed her. I killed your mother. She was in so much pain, and all she wanted to do was... oh my god, I am so sorry, Terry... I'm so sorry... I..."
[ Pause. ]
Terry: "You know what to do."
Apocalie: "...yeah, I do. I can put this right. It'll kill me, but... I can put this right. She was... she was a good woman, Terry, I'm so sorry. But that's it! No more deaths! Today, nobody else gets killed... not on Princess Apocalie's watch!"

Davis: "Where am I...? Did we beat them? Am I dead?"
Apocalie: "You beat them. Thanks to you, the Apocalypse Empire is gone for good."
Davis: "Is that... Apocalie?!"
Apocalie: [ Offering to help Davis up. ] "It's a long explanation, and I'll tell you all about it. Come on. It's a long way home."
[ Final words of the series. ]

Comments

• All of the dead heroes that have come before the Skyfighters come from previous series, although they're far too small to make out the details, so one can assume that they're probably not suggesting they're supposed to be them.
• The old Skyfighters: under Lord Apocalypse's thumb, to the left. You're welcome.
• Holy crap, Apocalie!
• The amount of time between the final fight and the "ceremony" is left unspecified, but still, that seems awfully fast; at least for Alex.
• The ending leaves a perfect sequel hook for the movie.
