Have Some Hart

Sam's old high school has fallen into the hands of the Apocalypse Empire! But has she finally found a problem she can't fight her way through?

Summary

After a dull day at school, Sam returns to find that Oji and the other Skyfighters are doing something even more dull: a tactical briefing. Apparently this morning a neighbourhood in the west end managed to fall into the hands of the Apocalypse Empire. Sam asks what they're waiting for, but Oji crossly explains that it's extremely well fortified, and they have to make a careful plan if they want to take it back. They start to argue, but is interrupted by the phone ringing. It's her friend Sachiko-- apparently her old high school, in another part of town, was taken over by a monster that morning! To the protests of her teammates, Sam leaves them to their planning so she help them.

Arriving at the school, she sees it crawling with Fangwings, an evil desolation lurking in the air. Even Sam is forced to admit she'd rather not fight her way through them all on her own; so she walks in, hoping that none of them recognize her out of uniform. For a second she thinks they have, but it turns out that they're just interested in rounding up all the students into classrooms. To her surprise, she finds her old friend Izumi; but when she asks her how their old gang is doing, she just responds angrily, telling her that Sachiko got taken away when she was caught making that call. Izumi raises her fist, enraged beyond Sam's comprehension, but just as Sam flinches, Izumi rushes forward and grabs her... and starts to cry. Sam hugs her, and tells her that she should take that out on the villains, not her. Izumi reluctantly agrees, and they fight their way through the Fangwing-filled hallway to where Sachiko is being held; Sam kicks in the classroom door, but is horrified when she realizes which room it is.

Flashback to the old days. Sam is wearing her old school's uniform, and kicks in the very same music room door. The teacher is inside, leaning disturbingly close to Izumi. Sam yells at him, calling him a creep and to keep his hands off her; telling Izumi to get back, she takes a swing at the teacher, then hits him when he's down. Izumi looks relieved. The next thing Sam knows, she's in the principal's office, being expelled from the school. Return to the present: Sachiko is tied to a chair, and a large monster, Golarr is interrupting giving orders to his Fangwings.

Golarr introduces himself, telling Sam that he already knows who she is. She hurriedly tells Izumi to untie Sachiko, and he lets her, just laughing. He calls her naive, saying that even if she beats him now, he'll just come back and hurt them again, like had happened to Izumi. Sam asks Izumi if that's true; she admits that's the real reason why she was so upset. Golarr continues to laugh, saying that all she's done is make them dependant on her, and actually left them worse off. Suddenly, someone shouts "That's not true!", and Golarr is beaten from behind with a saxaphone! He falls to the ground, revealing Sachiko quaking nervously, still holding her improvised weapon high. She tells Sam that she didn't leave them dependant; she was inspirational, getting Izumi to rescue her, and encouraging her to fight back. Sam and Izumi both look flustered, realizing she's right. "And you didn't even need to transform to do it," Sachiko says. Sam is surprised, but Sachiko tells her that she saw Skyfighter Orange fighting on TV and recognized her fighting style; but not to worry, her secret is safe. Sam makes Izumi promise that if she ever needs help, she can still count on her. Crying again, Izumi nods, hugging her.

Quotes

Davis: "Where are you going?!"
Sam: "To the school! While you sit on your hands with your 'planning,' I'm going to go actually help some people.
Kari: "You're being reckless!"
Sam: "No, I'm being responsible! You should try it sometime!"

Golarr: "Ah, Samantha Hart! I've heard so much about you!"
Sam: "Izumi, untie her. I'll take care of this bastard."
Golarr: "Ah, yes, like you took care of that music teacher? I'm sure you'll beat me this one time, but just like him, I'll be back when you're gone! Oh, didn't you know? You leave an awfully wide trail of people dependant on you behind!"

Golarr: "Now do you understand? You don't help them at all! You just teach them to rely on you! And then, once you're gone, you leave them helpless... worse off than when you started! I like you, Sam. You've already done more damage than I ever could've on my own! I never could have taken this school without your help!"
Sam: "I... he's right... I can't just fight my way through this. I'm an idiot. I'm an idiot and I've hurt my friends."
Sachiko: [ Knocks Golarr out with a saxaphone. ] "That's not true! You didn't teach us to be dependant... you inspired us!"

Sachiko: "When I watched one of the superheroes throwing herself right through an army of monsters using nothing but her fists, I just knew it had to be you! There's nobody else in this world half that reckless, you know. You're one of a kind, Sam."
