"I can't let the Apocalypse Empire destroy this world like they did to my own... Skycomputer! Find me five teenagers with fighting spirit!" --Commander Oji

Sam's Dangerous Past!

Sam finds herself unable to run from her past any longer, and is forced to stand her ground against the terror of her mother playing matchmaker!

Summary

Alex and Errol watch as Sam gets increasingly more agitated after picking up the phone, as she fidgets and yells nervously into the receiver. When she hangs up, it takes some prodding to get her to reveal what has left her, the toughest member of the Skyfighters, so rattled. She reveals that it was her mother calling for the first time in over a year, telling her that she found a candidate for a marriage interview. Both are shocked, not realizing that Sam was either Japanese or that she came from that kind of money. Sam furthermore explains that she just lied to her about having a boyfriend, but it didn't get rid of her at all; now she wants to meet him!

Some coercion is required.
Since her father is gone, she's the only family her mother has left, and she doesn't want to disappoint her. It takes some convincing, but Alex decides that the best course of action is to simply pretend that she does have one. The unlucky victim? Errol!

They meet Sam's mother and introduce Errol as her boyfriend. They try hard not to laugh when her mother tells them about what Sam was like when she was younger, and how proud she is of how she turned out to be such a refined young woman, with Errol trying very awkwardly to act with proper formality. When Errol is excused from the room, he wonders how they could possibly be related before Alex has to excuse himself; meanwhile, Sam's mother expresses concern that she can surely do better than him, and introduces her to the candidate. To her distress, she recognizes him immediately: it's Kime-Ra in disguise!

Unable to call him out without ruining face in front of her mother and not wanting to let on that she recognizes him, she announces that she's going to dump Errol, and wants him to see Mr. Ra beforehand. They go out together, Sam going through the motions in hope that Errol will catch on. After some exacerbated charades on her part, he finally notices, and tells the suitor that he knows who he is. Frustrated, Mr. Ra drops his disguise, to Sam's mother's shock; to her even greater shock, Errol transforms into Skyfighter Green to protect them! Once Kime-Ra is defeated, Sam pretends to fall back in love with Errol.

Alex returns to find everything fine, Sam's mother having decided that a superhero is a perfectly respectable suitor for her daughter. She wishes them well, and all three leave, feeling like they completely failed to learn any sort of moral from the experience.

Quotes

Sam: "Why did you think I was an American?! Is it because I'm a tomboy?!"
Errol: "No! Just, well, because your name is 'Sam Hart'? Hart isn't really very Japanese, you know."
Sam: "What, you don't think the Japanese have heart? Is that what you're saying?"
Errol: "No, I was... I meant... you know what, I'm not saying anything, not anymore. I am just going to shut up forever, so I don't say something even more stupid, that's what I'm going to do."

Alex: "If you said you already had a boyfriend, then why don't you just bring one and pretend?"
Sam: "You'd do that?"
Alex: "Oh no, not me. I couldn't do that to Kari. But there's somebody else single that could work..."
[ Sam and Errol both look confused, then slowly realize what he means, glancing at each other. ]
Sam and Errol: "Absolutely not."

Sam: "Oh, Errol! You're so good at protecting me, but I'm afraid I have to go with Mr. Ra here! My mother really does know best."
Errol: "Oh, well, alright. I guess that's fair."
Sam: [ Annoyed. ] "I mean, you know who he is, right? How could I refuse, having already met him?"
Errol: "You don't have to explain! So long as you're happy!"
Sam: [ Even more dramatically. ] "He's a scientist, you know! A really important one!"
Mr. Ra: "Civil servant, actually."
Sam: "Oh, you mean you work for the Empire?"
Errol: "You're being awfully weird, Sam. That's an odd way of describing the country."
Sam: [ Clearly at her wits' end, everyone confused. ] "So please don't take this break-up harshly. I wouldn't want you to get into a fight with an important scientist who's from the Empire."
Errol: "Oh, of course, that wouldn't be proper at all. [ Pause, squints. ] Wait, hold on a second... haven't we met before, Mr. Ra?!"

Kime-Ra: "How did you see through my cunning disguise?!"
Errol: "Oh, you know. I've got an eye for that sorta thing."

Alex: "Did I miss anything important?"
Sam's mother: "Errol is actually a Skyfighter... he saved me and Samantha from a terrible monster!"
Alex: "Oh, okay. I'd be upset if I missed something important."

Errol: "You know, maybe I'm crazy, but I can't shake the feeling we forgot something. Don't you think that's weird?"
Alex: "We saved Sam from an arranged marriage... what else is there?"
Sam: "As far as I'm concerned, we won this one."
Errol: "Well, of course, naturally. But we didn't actually learn anything here. What we just did here was save the day by being completely and thoroughly dishonest with Sam's own mother! Isn't there supposed to be some sort of moral that teaches you can't get away with lying, or that respect for your parents always comes first, or something?"
Sam: "You're right. [ Beat. ] You are crazy."
